Thanks, Thomas & Javier, but it seems to make no difference if the list of
letters in variable is in quotes or not - but only as long as there are no
spaces in each item. So (A,B,C) works but (Joe Bloggs, Fred Bloggs, Mike
Bloggs) would fail without quotes.

I'm not sure which way is correct so, generally, I use the quoted version to
be safe. However, for this problem, that is not the cause as far as I can
tell.
