Bill,

The most exciting feature of R:BASE 6.x and higher is the ability
to store and display binary files_Binary Large OBjects or BLOBs.
This term refers to binary data as opposed to ASCII data.

In addition, the VARCHAR data type lets you store large ASCII
data files (Large OBjects or LOBs). The data for VARBIT and
VARCHAR data type is stored in the R:BASE dbname.rb4 file.
As with the other three database files, dbname.rb4 is linked with
a timestamp and can be stored on a different drive.

With the POWER and ROBUSTNESS of The Glorious R:BASE
2000 (ver 6.5++) for Windows VARCHAR data type, now you can
ENTER, EDIT and STORE large ASCII files and the files with more
data that can be placed in a NOTE data type.

A VARCHAR data type is defined with a length, or as a LONG
VARCHAR to be variable length.

Using The Magical R:BASE 7.0 for Windows, you can VIEW,
ENTER, EDIT, STORE and PRINT a very_long VARCHAR data.
Using the COOL Report Designer, you can even print hundreds
pages long VARCHAR data without being truncated!

Additional Notes:

. You CAN convert TEXT and NOTE data type column(s) to VARCHAR.

. Using Object Manager Data Designer, VARCHAR data type is defined
   as LONG VARCHAR.

. Using CREATE TABLE ... command you can define VARCHAR (xxx)
data type with a fixed length.

. If you set the maximum length to a value over 32,767 characters, the
limit is ignored and defaults to 256 MB.

. You cannot use SELECT (AggregateFunction(VarcharColumn)) on
   VARCHAR column.

. An expression cannot contain a column of type VARCHAR.

Enjoy The Glorious R:BASE 2000 (ver 6.5++) and the upcoming Magical
R:BASE 7.0 for Windows http://www.rbase.com/rbg7 (currently under
private beta).

Very Best Regards,

Razzak.
