"Start" is a Windows command line program and maybee it is only for Win 98, and you use it to run a program in another window. There are also some other flags for it so you can control how it acts. For example /w for wait will caluse the calling program to wait until the started window closes before it continues. So if you want R:base to wait for another program to finish before it continues, use the /w flag.
