I wonder if an old hand scanner like the ones we used to use before flatbeds (I have an old Logitech around here somewhere) and OCR software would work? They used a serial port, although there must be newer ones that use firewire or one of the newer protocols; they would scan 4 in. path that would be sufficient for most labels . If you can get an OCR package that will get you a decent translation, then you can do some parsing and match it to existing records in the database. Does any one remember the old command SOUNDS LIKE (or something to that effect) in the early versions of R:Base?
