Wedge readers rely on the decoder chip in the keyboard so they require a
keyboard hooked up. Just hooking the wedge reader right into the laptop
keyboard port won't cut it. 

There might be some wedge readers out there that have the keyboard
decoder built in, I haven't researched that aspect.

Javier,

        The Zebra barcoding 'wedge', a handheld scanner,
plugs between the keyboard and the system.  It works just as
you described.  On a laptop, since there is not a connector
between the computer and the keyboard, there used to be some
special considerations (I can't remember if it could be made
to work -- perhaps with an external keyboard installed...)
