Could this be in any way related to the old NTFS vs FAT32 file-attribute
issue?

Sorry I don't have the background to fully explain the issue, much less
solve the problem, but at least recognize what MIGHT be the cause.  I had
some sort of problem w/this back in June, but I don't recall if it presented
itself to me the same way that yours is presenting to you.  However, I think
there has been discussion in the past few months on this topic ...
