Steve: You can't control the autonumer sequence elegantly/safely that I know of. In my apps the user only sees identifying numbers that they assign (Checks, Invoices, etc...). I use autonumbers in code to identify the row independently, so a break in the sequence doesn't matter.
I also gave up using "Entry" forms, everything is done in edit mode. The app checks to see how many "empty" records there are (you decide what constitutes an incomplete record) and inserts a predetermined number. It also checks to see what the next "user" indentifier should be. During data entry the user just clicks a "Next" button to get to the next empty row (the eep behind the next button usually does data validation as well).
