Is there anyway I can check if a shared folder or file has write permissions?

I have shared a folder on my xp machine, but haven't provided "let users modify
my files".
While testing when I pass the file name and path to another programming using
shell. It encountered an error.

I know I can catch errors, but I don't want to have to write to the file, which
could be a very big ms access database just to test this.

Any ideas?

TIA
