Posts: 12 These two bocks are recommended by RealSoft and is
possible to purchase combined with the software:

ISBN
0672328135 --- CHOATE, MARK:REALBASIC CROSS PLATFORM AP
159059634X --- FORD, JERRY LEE, JR:BEGINNING REALBASIC:

I'm a beginner, but I have previous experience of Visual Basic. I've done some
ASP hacking for the web for quite some time, a few years. I've experience of
databases, I'm quite good at SQL.

I'm thinking of buying these books, but the content is difficult to read about.
I didn't find any info.

I shall start this new project. I shall build the chat client, a simple e-mail
look alike software for exchanging messages, some kind of internet software and
also the simple search engine. Looking for pages with extended criteria...

Will these books be good for me to buy for this purpose?

Also, at Amazon, these books were possible to purchase as a pair! I guess many
people do this rather than the purchase from RealSoft. REALbasic becomes even
more perfect the more I look into this! So far, I understand all the codes and
examples. I truly believe it will be awesome to get to know this software
closer...!!

good books. I'd recommend working through the tutorial and the example projects.

Posts: 226 I have both books and refer to them often. Mark
Choate's book is my favorite as it contains much more information and
functional descriptions of RB lanuage.

Posts: 12 Thank you for these comments! I shall invest in these
books.

Please help me further!!

I've come to the conclusion that for me it will be the best to invest in the
Professional Edition of REALbasic, for the purpose of my various projects.

But I look at the REAL SQL Server. I really don't understand the purpose of
this software. Help me! As the example, if I shall build the chatclient, it
would be useful to keep all contacts in the database. Will I need to buy the
REAL SQL Server for another 400 Euro for this purpose???

According to this text: "(the single-user database embedded in the REALbasic
Framework)"

Does this mean, it will be possible to create software using the built-in
database?

****
I get the impression:
REAL SQL Database is included in the REAL Professional and is possible to use
in any application.

(To be honest, I would prefer to buy in US Dollars...)

Location: Portland, OR USA REAL SQL Database is included in all
versions of RB. REAL SQL Server is a separate product, and requires the Pro
version to use. The choice of db to use is based on whether you need multiple
users accessing the same data at the same time, or whether the users will be
acting on their own unique data. REALSQLdatabase is a single user db, whereas
REAL SQL Server is a multiuser client/server database.

Posts: 12 Thank you for describing these details! I assume it is
possible to write quite advanced software using the Pro edition. It will be
good to start with!

Location: London, UK If you're proficient with SQL, I'd imagine
you'd be better off using something like MySQL or Postgres (both of which are
free) for a server, rather than Real SQL Server, which costs money. SQLite
(which Real SQL Database and Real SQL Server are based on) is a great product,
but I can't imagine using it for a serious server application, especially when
something like Postgres is free, unless you really need the simplicity of
configuration and installation.

This isn't a slam against SQLite, of course - I use it heavily in desktop
applications, and it's an enormous improvement on Real's old "home grown"
database. I just don't think it's really designed to compete with "real"
database servers. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, though...

Cheers,

Tim,.

Posts: 12 I was ordering the books from Amazon on October 16, and
paying for the cheapest possible way of shipping. Estimated delivery were Nov
20 to Dec 5:th.

I live in Sweden and I was very surprised when receiving a note in late October
that the books were waiting for me in the post-office!! I have forgotten the
date, but it took no longer than a long week. Maybe 8 days!?

The books arrived to Stockholm October 22, only six days after purchase... Not
only in the "ordinary brown box for books with the Amazon logotype", but also
in a big, gray plastic bag NOT aimed for the end customer saying "United Sates
Postal Service" in big letters! Great surprise!

The books went by air, San Fransisco --> JFK --> Stockholm.

I've read the beginning of both books and now I agree with previous posts:
These books are really good!

It's a great difference in REALbasic in this version compared to the version as
I bought in January 2000. As everyone using RB knows...

RB seems to be even better than I expected and I hope to test parts of the
project in January. I look forward to this very much!
