Location: Philadelphia, PA In 2008, when REAL Software still used
standard HTML files for the Language Reference accessible from within the
REALbasic IDE, it was possible from within the RB IDE to do things like add
annotations, include direct http links, provide alphabetical indexes, etc.
That has since changed.

Well, I haven't yet worked out a way to do all of those things from within the
present RB IDE, but it is possible to do some of them alongside the RB IDE, and
it's easy enough to swith between the two (e.g., for Linux, put them on
separate panels and switch between the two as needed).

Here's a Question, however, and an Answer.

Question: If instead of the Language Reference (based upon a database)
accessible from within the RB IDE you load in separately the PDF REALbasic
Language Reference, how do you add annotations to the Language Reference PDF
file?

Answer: No problem! If you are running Windows, I recommend that you
download, install, and use the portable free version of PDF-XChange Viewer(from
http://www.docu-track.com/PDFX_Vwr_Port.zip).

Here's what PC World has to say about this program:

"Adobe's popular PDF format makes files look great--at least, when the original
material does--and Adobe Reader lets everyone look at the files for free.
However, you can't type or make annotations--those are the province of Adobe's
expensive Acrobat software. Tracker Software's PDF-Xchange Viewer offers a
useful alternative. This attractive, easy-to-use freebie can't create PDFs, but
it lets you monkey with existing ones all you like. It accepts many kinds of
markup, from highlighting to circles to sticky notes.... You can export the
product in a number of different forms--including BMP and TIFF--and (of course)
you can save it as a PDF."

And here are Wikipedia's comments:

"PDF-XChange Viewer is a free PDF reader for Microsoft Windows. The basic
reader can be downloaded for free, and includes extended/markup capabilities,
such as typing, highlighting, callouts, notes, and more.... This viewer
program is capable of being used to type text over existing PDF files."

See http://www.docu-track.com/news/show/63 for other reviews and comments.

PDF-XChange works only with Windows, but you may be able to find similar
programs that work with Linux or the Mac. (I haven't yet checked this out, but
when I do so, I expect Wikapedia's "List of PDF software" at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PDF_software to be helpful.)

If you find a good Linux or Mac program that allows you to add annotations to
PDF files, please post that information here in this thread. Thanks!
