I have experimented with a custom server build (bare metal and virtual), a 
hosted solution, Amazons elastic cloud and VirtualBox (all using linux).

After the initial setup I have to say that by far the easiest and fastest and 
cheapest method to test your apps is with VirtualBox (as far as ease of setup 
goes nothing beats elastic cloud).

Virtual box will enable your dev PC to run an actual server instance which is 
super fast because it lives on the same machine.

Setting up can be a bit tricky but is achievable by most people. Just ensure 
you set your network card to bridged mode in virtual box and after the initial 
install (if using ISO's) set the boot order to HDD first (or you will 
continually install the server on boot).

Get your LAMP image from Turnkey linux as they are pre configured and easy to 
use.

ask!
