Had I known what I know now I wouldn't have purchased a license. Don't get me wrong, I love Real Studio and I understand they need to protect their business but I just hate it when I can't purchase something and then detach from the vendor if I so choose. I love being part of a comunity but hate being forced into one. Am I being paranoid? Not sure what you mean by "detach from the vendor" RS is a subscription model.... if you have an active subscription you get latest updates/new versions etc... But if you decide to let your subscription lapse... you are still free to use the last version of RS for as long as you wish. _________________ Dave Sisemore MacPro, OSX Lion 10.7.4 RB2012r1 Note : I am not interested in any solutions that involve custom Plug-ins of any kind Top HMARROQUINC Post subject: Re: Should I have read the license/validation model better?Posted: Tue Nov 27, 2012 1:01 pm Joined: Sun Jan 25, 2009 5:11 pm Posts: 241 DaveS wrote:Exactly what issue with the license concerns you? At work where I use RS I don´t the computers contected to the internet except for a couple that are there to check email and that type of thing. My development computer is NOT connected to the internet. From what I was reading the IDE calls home ever 90 days and validates the license and if no internet connection is available it requests an 8 digit code to be entered, this code will have to be requested to RS. Possible problem being not living in the US, different time zone, international calls. Yes, I understand that email is available but not 24/7. What I mean from detaching from the vendor is I purchase the license and I don´t need to keep in touch with the vendor any more, not even transparently. I like being able to not depend on a vendor long term. The revalidation is simply delayed until there is a connection, which could be never. The ONLY time a revalidation will prevent your use of the software is if the connection is successful, and the server explicitly tells the IDE the license is invalid. Also, the new license scheme to go in effect for 2013r1 will allow you "detach" as you describe it. Although the new system is very much more "hands-on" with the server, this is completely optional. You can go on our website and download a key file which can be stored on your computer any way you like. This file can activate the IDE at any time, even without an internet connection. Conversely, if you decide you don't want to think about licenses, the new server will handle all that for you based on your login. By signing into the IDE, the server will automatically keep your licenses in sync. When you buy a renewal on our website, it'll be added to the IDE as soon as you launch it. So we're really pushing hard towards ends of the spectrum. On one hand, you can stay completely detached. On the other, you can keep very in touch. _________________ Thom McGrath - @tekcor Web Framework Architect, Real Software, Inc. I did further reading and it works as you state. In fact I was going to post about it. So it seems I was being a bit paranoid. I look forward to a long lasting relationship with RS. I like what you guys are doing.
