In PostgreSQL, can I update a field type so that it must have a value when the
record is created or there will be an error? I have a bug thats not filling out
a field sometimes and its very rare. I thought if I could make the database
throw an error if that field was blank, I would be able to find it.

But I need to do it on a running database so I don't want to screw it up. Also,
later it might be good to turn the field back to a normal field. Is that easy
and reliable to be able to do?

specify a field cannot be NULL usually during the CREATE TABLE phase, but can
be added (in some databases) using ALTER TABLE
