Posts: 31 Hi Everyone, I had posted some months back about
wanting to use WE to create an iPad based add-on for our Mac based point of
sale application which is written in RS. We don't have the budget to hire an
Obj-C developer plus the time it would take to port everything over would be
unbelievable and we would be managing both the RS Mac sourcecode and the Obj-C
iPad code. REAL has iPad support coming, but Im going to be hesitant to roll
out a business grade app built in the first version of that and every time Ive
emailed them they refuse to give me even a slight hint as to a timeframe, so it
makes me worry that it could realistically be over a year before its even out,
let alone a version that would be stable enough for us to develop on.

iPad support is a huge next step, and we have been told by some perspective
resellers of our software that they would not offer it until there is iPad
support. We want to move forward with something and Web Edition seems like the
best bet because we can use all the database/xml-based data classes that drive
the Mac app and just apply it to a web driven interface without having to
completely rewrite any of the key features.

My idea now is just use Obj-C to write a thin client that would store some
settings and behave as an iPad app, but then have it display a web driven
interface that would be the bulk of the functionality. Deployment options and
socket behavior are really the two things that are going to make or break the
feasibility of doing this on WE, so I wanted to get some input from people who
have worked with it. After coming across some limitations for WE as far as
sockets are concerned, I have decided the best bet would be to have my existing
server app/database installer turn the Mac into a web server and install my
compiled WE app. The iPads could then just connect into that web app locally.
Im wondering if this is even possible to accomplish, and if so, what it would
entail? Are there any examples of setting up a web server like this using shell
scripts so this could be easily replicated for a distribution? Thanks in
advance!
