Looked at Mono (being a C# developer), Java Swing, etc. Found many solutions. None I liked. Well, I love C# and .NET but I want my apps to run on the Mac. I am also focused on desktop applications. Anyway, my first product will probably be open source. It's a hobbyist project for a very small market. OK, here is where I am confused. I am currently using the trial edition. I am able to build my app and run on both Mac and Windows (I develop on a Mac). I assume this is not supported in the paid personal edition? Plus, I just found there is going to be a pricing change where the IDE is free but I have to pay $300 to be able to deploy (distribute) my apps to all three platforms?? Why couldn't I just buy the $100 personal edition now and get the "free" upgrade to the $300 version when the 2013 edition comes out?? So, could someone help me understand what I need to do in order to: 1) Develop on a Mac. 2) Distribute (either commercially or via open source sites like GitHub) my application so that it will run on Windows and Mac (Linux fine but not required). Plus, 3) What restrictions will I have before/after the 2013 release? 4) Do I have to pay an additional $300 in order to be able to connect to remote databases? I am mostly concerned with graphical applications (using built in SQLite would be fine) but I could see me down the road developing apps that connect to remote databases. Thanks Top DaveS Post subject: Re: Please help me understand the pricing and restrictions.Posted: Tue Mar 19, 2013 10:52 am Joined: Sun Aug 05, 2007 10:46 am Posts: 4688 Location: San Diego, CA OK, here is where I am confused. I am currently using the trial edition. I am able to build my app and run on both Mac and Windows (I develop on a Mac). I assume this is not supported in the paid personal edition? Currently only if you buy a PERSONAL license for each Platform Plus, I just found there is going to be a pricing change where the IDE is free but I have to pay $300 to be able to deploy (distribute) my apps to all three platforms?? Why couldn't I just buy the $100 personal edition now and get the "free" upgrade to the $300 version when the 2013 edition comes out?? YOU CAN! So, could someone help me understand what I need to do in order to: 1) Develop on a Mac. 2) Distribute (either commercially or via open source sites like GitHub) my application so that it will run on Windows and Mac (Linux fine but not required). Source Code.... no problem. Compiled app depends on your license Plus, 3) What restrictions will I have before/after the 2013 release? Minimum level after 2013 release will contain more than current PERSONAL 4) Do I have to pay an additional $300 in order to be able to connect to remote databases? Yes (assuming that is what the doc says.. I don't recall the price)... but SQLite is FREE (as it is not a remote database) _________________ Dave Sisemore MacPro, OSX Lion 10.7.4 RB2012r1 Note : I am not interested in any solutions that involve custom Plug-ins of any kind Top cbmeeks Post subject: Re: Please help me understand the pricing and restrictions.Posted: Tue Mar 19, 2013 11:03 am Joined: Tue Mar 19, 2013 7:11 am Posts: 4 Thanks for the fast reply. So other than remote database support, what will I NOT be able to do if I purchase the personal edition now and get the free upgrade in the 2013 release? Will the 2014 edition require a renewal license? But I can use 2013 forever? Personally I have extended my OSX personal license into 2015 And yes... your 2013 (or any version you license) will work as long as it is compatible with the OS involved (who knows what OSX 14.9 might break) but you will NOT get upgrades once you license expires (annual renewals are 50% of original price I believe) _________________ Dave Sisemore MacPro, OSX Lion 10.7.4 RB2012r1 Note : I am not interested in any solutions that involve custom Plug-ins of any kind Top cbmeeks Post subject: Re: Please help me understand the pricing and restrictions.Posted: Tue Mar 19, 2013 2:06 pm Joined: Tue Mar 19, 2013 7:11 am Posts: 4 You've talked me into it. I will be purchasing the personal edition this evening. So, will there still be different editions post 2013 release? Is there a breakdown comparing them? Thanks!
