Location: Grand Rapids MI Area Is there a way to have an action
preformed when you click on a menu bar option ?

Menu bar: File Edit Database Help

I would like to do an action if the Database menu item was selected.
Can this be done or are the children of menu items only able to do this
using the menu handlers ?

There's no action sent if the item has children so I doubt you can set this up

What action?
You might be able to do it in the EnableMenuItems event if if is not visible to
the user.
You might trick it by putting a small canvas at the top of the window, and
detecting a mouseover on the way to the menu.
