(desktop app). I am storing the username and Passwords in a database. So what I
am looking for is an example of something that reads the database and if the
username exists then allow it to enter.

How do you store the password in the database? Not in plain text huh?
If so, don't store the password, store a hash of the password and a random salt
in the database.
Upon login, hash the supplied password+salt and compare it to the stored hash
in the database

Don't use MD5 as hash. Use something better like SHA256/512!
