Posts: 357 Someone gave me a USB foot pedal and they want me to
see if I can get it to start and stop a MoviePlayer movie (to do
transcription). I've got no clue how to even go about it. I read the
documentation, but am a bit confused. When the app opens I have this...

If Serial1.Open then
MsgBox "The serial port was opened."
  TextArea.text = serial1.readAll
Else
MsgBox "The serial port could not be opened."
End if

I get no text in the TextArea even though it says it is open whether I push the
pedals or not. Do I need a plugin or library from the manufacturer to talk to
this device?

A USB port and a serial port, are not quite the same thing. USB ports, I am
sure you are familiar with. Serial ports, also known as RS232 ports, come in 9
pin and 25 pin, 'D' Type flavours.

Real Studio can address an RS232 serial port natively, using the Serial control
class.

There is no native Real Studio control for addressing a USB port.

There are some USB devices which present themselves to the operation system as
a virtual serial port, and those devices can be addressed with the RS Serial
control.

Other USB devices can be addressed using declared function calls into 3rd party
API libraries (.dll files on windows). These too can be addressed using Real
Studio but require 'low level' knowledge of the devices specific library.

Other USB devices may not be at all compatible with Real Studio.

The first things you need to establish are, what device you have and what API,
if any, is available for it.
