Some dbms's do not allow for defined computed columns, such as mySql. Which I don't think is a bad thing. I guess they just expect you to do your calculating in a SELECT statement.
Anyhow I don't see that the difference in expressions as an issue, there may be a reason why that may come in handy, although I can't think of any.
