I too have had major problems with getting 'sum of x' to work in reports, the totals (sums) being nulls or zeros when they should exist. Using a DB calc variable works properly but my simple sum of x does not. I found however that if I set the variable to zero prior to printing the report, rather than leaving it as a null, the sum was calculated correctly.
However the next problem is, if I print to the screen, the sums are correct, but then if I print from the preview screen, the sums revert to 0. (I am using build 7.1.76.30715 on one PC and 7.1.78.30916 on another - both exhibit similar problems) Any suggestions would be appreciated. You need the dot (.vtotalcost2). Sometimes I would just OK out of the create variable window and then go back in and try it again. In prior releases, I noticed that sometimes newly created variables weren't available for use in sum of expressions unless you "save" first. I wasn't able to pin it down - probably something I was doing wrong, and it hasn't happened to me in update 77 - I think 76 was the last time.
