I have 2 of the high end Intermec devices, and I have 2 of the high end Symbol MC9000 devices.  I don’t remember the model numbers on the Intermec units.

The Symbol devices are a 100 times better.  The wireless radios work better, the bar code scanners work better, they boot up faster, and are more reliable than the Intermec devices.

One of the Symbol MC9000 devices I have has the long range bar code scanner option.  It works great unless you are outside on a sunny day, and then the scanner is almost worthless.  The unit I have with the normal range scanner works fine in the sun up to 3 feet away.  We use the long range scanner and do inventory on cloudy days.  It will read a bar code from 15 feet.

The ones I have are all the top of the line units, or were when we bought them.  They cost between $3,500 and $4,000 each.  They are ruggedized, water proof, and shock proof up to 6 foot drop.

The applications we run are all web based apps using the wireless network.  I have not used pocket R:base on them, but they are all just Windows CE devices so should work fine.

Thank you for the info.  I was also able to obtain a unit at a very reasonable price from System ID Warehouse.  I had visited thier web site before, but did not see any information on refurbished units.  This fit the price / requirements very well!

So I have ordered Pocket Rbase and a PPT2700 and  am on my way to a new adventure in portable computing!

Thanks again.

Bob,

I set up an small Pocket RBase app that would transfer over orders to a handheld for our delivery drivers and collect signatures from the recipients.  The unit I used was a Symbol PPT2700  running Windows CE and it has a built in Bar code scanner.  It only has 16 MB of memory, But it ran Pocket RBase fine.  I have not taken the program out of it's initial stages until I finish our upgrade of our main system to RB 7.1.  I got our unit refurbished from a low cost supplier System ID Warehouse (systemid.com) for about $650 with docking station. If you any other questions feel free to contact me.

Subject: [RBG7-L] - Pocket Rbase

I am looking at the possibility of starting a project with Pocket Rbase.  Before I do, I need to review what "handhelds" with barcode scanners are available and what the costs are.

Thus, my request is for information on what equipment people are using out there.  This project will be used for scanning barcodes in our factory so I need the units to be Pocket Rbase compatible, built in scanner, portable and dockable.  I do not foresee using wireless at this time.

I have looked at Intermec, Symbol and HDD.  Any comments would be appreciated.  Specifically the Intermec 600 series.

Also, I did not see the memory requirements for Pocket Rbase on the web page.  Would someone please be so kind to advise of the actual amount needed to effectively run it?

Thanks,

-Bob
