Another thing to check besides the excellent advice
you've already received:
If the column is INDEXED, then your indexes might
be corrupt. This can be fixed by:
1. DISCONNECT in R:Base
2. Backup the four database files to another
directory
3. in R:Base type: SET MULTI OFF
4. CONNECT databasename
5. PACK KEYS
