Bob thanks for the description on the how the
Scratch setting works. It really helps to understand exactly what is
happening on the data. Since there is great deal (14) of temp tables
and views, cutting down the traffic across the network will really
help.

Gary,
Your scratch setting may be causing part of the
problem. Setting Scratch ON means that all the sort files are
being stored on the database directory which is the server. So the
scenario goes like this.... all the database info gets sent to the processor
on the work station across the network, then back to the server for the sort
files (scratch) generation, then back to the work station and so forth.
Set Scratch = C:\Windows\Temp (for XP) and all the temp files will be
created on the desk top and thus eliminate a huge amount of network
traffic. This should help a fair amount. Please note that the
report will never run quite as fast over a network verses the local drive as
there is a big difference in 100 mb speed of a network versus the bus speed of
a computer. However you should not see that big a difference and I
believe setting your scratch files differently will help.
