Thanks for the reply.  You are right, there is no option for #dup in a dbgrid or a drop down lookup box.  This would be a good enhancement for the lookup box when one is entering large volumes of data into forms.  I have resorted to pop-ups instead.  Always another  way to skin the cat.....

Using 7.1, right click the DB Edit field, select Properties and then the Effects tab.
There is a field for Default value.  When I place #DUP in the Default value, it works fine on my forms.
 
However, there appears to be no option for this in a DB Grid.
