How do I clear the variable between records? Do I have to have the photo image in the customer table (like RRBYW9) to achomplish this in 7.1?

I have a customer form that I want to have customer photos show in. I
decided to set up a separate table for the photos linked by the customer
number and the Variable Image control to show the photo. I can get such
linked photos to show up, but when the next record is selected using Next
Row, the variable is not reset to null for customers without photos, and
actually overlays additional photos if they exist.
