No, the Sony is strictly a turntable with a built-in amp. Standard
attachment to the line-in on the sound card. I use Magix software for the
cleaning and conversion which has done a good job for me. I've got 75
converted now and only a few hundred more to go. In my case the Sony unit
gave me a lot more desk space than my old amplifier and a separate changer.
It was worth the few dollars, i.e., <$100.

The Sony PS-LS250H has an internal pre-amp. Does it come with the software
that you need to convert a vinyl record to a CD?

The ADS Technologies RDX-150 Instant Music device comes with all needed
software and is currently $38.94 from Amazon with free shipping. ADS has a
bunch of neat gadgets and they are at:

Bernie, I recently got a Sony Turntable PS-LX250H which has permitted me to
transfer vinyl recordings to digital without an amp. There is a switch
setting which permits this and it does work. There also another unit which,
unfortunately is at my "winter" home that lets you go from any unit to a USB
port digital input. It worked okay for me but not as well as the Sony unit
has done.

Bernie:

The review (not really an article) is in PC Magazine, issue December 28,
page 22. This, BTW, is the same issue with the review of our friend Jeff
Ward's new Lapinator product (page 156).

A pre-amp? Nope, never heard of that animal. Would that just be a
receiver? I'm working with Doug Hamilton on getting this figured out.
Amazing how you can be such a dynamite programmer (humble...) and yet be
CLUELESS about digital music stuff! He had to describe where the little
plug-in jacks are on my laptop like he was talking to an 8 year old. Wait,
an 8 year old would know that stuff, so maybe like a 3 year old...

According to AdsTech, you need to connect your turntable to a pre-amplifier.

In my younger, Heathkit days, I had a pre-amp. Now what do we do?

10. Capturing <http://64.227.78.201/support/faq/faq.asp?product_id=RDX-150>
audio from a Turn-Table (LP).
a.If you are using a Turn-Table, you must use a Pre-Amplifier to make sure
you obtain the appropriate volume level for audio capture with the Instant
Music device.
b.Configuration should be: Turn-Table to Pre-Amplifier and then connect the
audio output from the Pre-Amplifier to the Instant Music Left-Right RCA
Input jacks.

I looked in the January 2005 issue and can't find this article. Can you
tell me what page to look at?
