I do feel very much as Lawrence on this issue!
In the past I did have trouble running a Mix of TCPI/IPX/Netbios over the
the network. When I stayed on TCPIP as protocol the problem disappeared.
Recently I did disconnect my W2000 printserver replacing it with a XP
printserver due to LPT1-9 mapping from the server misbehaved when on a W2000
server and behaved again on a XP server. I am not saying it is anything
wrong with W2000 it might be wrong with my knowledge on W2000 but this
things helped me!

Yes, such a problem exists. The problem is related to the Windows
networking
scheme and affects some, but not all, installations. It depends on a number
of
factors and, to the best of my knowledge, no one ever figured out exactly
when
the problem would occur.

When the problem _does_ occur, it affects all programs that use shared
access
to files on the server. Thus, you see the same thing happening in Access,
Foxpro, and so on. If you search newsgroups, you will find the occasional
user
of those programs asking the same question you are.

The problem is that when the necessary conditions exist and files are opened
in
shared mode the network traffic increases by close to 100 times.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any solution. I believe that whatever the
underlying conditions are, one constant is always that Windows 2000 Server
is
involved on the server end -- if you have another machine that can host the
database files that may be the quickest work around for you.
