Thanks to all of the Rbase Listserv folks that have responded to my plea for
help.  Your advice worked perfectly and my problem disappeared!  I'm
grateful for your help!

1. Are you inadvertently clearing a variable inside the loop?

2. Are all your variables created and typed outside the loop?

3. Are you retyping a variable inside the loop? I know we used to do this
all the time, but ... 

4. Is your SCRATCH set to a local drive folder?

5. If this is only on certain PCs, what are the virtual memory settings?
What happens if you set
the virtual memory to 3x RAM for both minimum and maximum values?
