With the help of John Minyo I was able to reinstall v.7.0 and then update to v.81. Everything appears to have gone well. I suspect that the impending failure of the hard drive was probably causing the initial problems, and that upgrading Windows to 2000 Pro also helped. R:Base seems to run faster than ever.
