It didn't ask me for a yes or no but I added Y to the command file and it
worked. Actually there were 3 files to be retrieved and it retrieved 2 of
them.
The difference is that the 3rd file has the same name as the first file
except for 'case'. One is upper case, the other is lower case.
I set case on but it didn't make any difference.
So I'm almost there.

Just a wild thought.. Ask the submitter of the files (server owner) to
store only those that should be picked up in the "pickup" directory.
Then do an ftp and get *.*
I'll check over here if you can do a get *.* with ftp.

The problem was trying to use a wild card for the 3rd component. If I
specify the full filename, then I receive it ok. But the problem is
that the third component is a datetime value, and I have no way of
knowing this unless they tell me in advance, which they don't.
If anyone has any ideas how to handle this situation, I would certainly
appreciate it?

Try quoting the file name anyway, just to see what happens. I have had
"fun" sometimes with file names with multiple "."s in any number of
programs. Never tried with R:Base, though. I am sure my first time
will come soon ...
