I frequently ask myself that. Seriously, with a Patagonia base layer, Filson wool trousers and sweater, and Ibex wool jacket, the body stays warm enough. The extra thick Filson socks keep my feet plenty warm. Usually a scarf and knit hat do for the noggin, but have a Girneau balacava for the real cold stuff (made in Canada - the only non-US component of the listed arsenal). Hands are the real problem. Since letting them get too cold a couple years ago, I just cannot find the right mix of warmth and dexterity from gloves. I have been following home prices in Sonoma on Trulia the past few months. The idea of a winter retreat where daytime 30s are rare is seeming more and more appealing.
