Scientific, no. Anecdotally, it¹s been my experience that when it comes to sand, overall tire width is more important than 584 v. 622. I put some Schwalbe Racing Ralph¹s 29x2.4s on and really noticed a difference in flotation v. 26x2.0s AND 29x2.0s.
Did a 30-mile singletrack ride this weekend involving lots of riding in sand and all of the guys were joking around saying that once we got to a particular 3-mile sand wash I was going to float over it since I was on a 29er. Most of us, 29er or not, spend a good stretch of that wash hoofing it. http://dirttreaders.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=1913&start=0 When not riding sand washes, I still prefer 29ers in the rough and rocky stuff. It just rolls better. I too looked at the Bombadil geometry today and was bummed that 622 wheels don¹t start until the size up from what I¹d ride.
