One time on a camping trip, my (the young teenaged) daughter tried to
force a shift too late on a steep little pitch and bent a chain link.
She was pretty upset and thought she'd be walking back to camp. I
calmed her down, pulled out a chain tool, took out the bad link and we
were on our way in a few minutes.

I can't recall ever having broken a chain myself. I'm probably doomed
now!
