Hey Patrick, The Fizik gel under my tape is no thicker that double layering tape (cork under cork). It is pretty moldable so you can kind of mold it onto your bar prior to taping. While you wrap, you have to make sure the gel is not lifting ahead of the tape from the pressure of the tape, but as long as you're careful, it comes out nice and even-no lumps. Onc wrapped, it appears to stay in place as mine hasn't moved. I also tried the Specialized version but it's softer, squishier and seems to move under the tape a bit.

Not overly squishy, but it take a lot of the road shock away. It's made for road drops but there's two strips that are straight and the curved portions are fairly malleable so you should be able to get them to work on the curves of a moustache bar. No 1,000 mile rides for me, but one problem I have with an otherwise generally comfortable hooks position is that, after a few miles, my left palm starts getting sore and, eventually, numb; my right hand is never troubled. Do you think that some of this would help with the palm? And, #2: is it very bulky? -- Would it bulge noticeably under a layer of syntho-cork? Or does the stuff go on like regular bar tape, as the sole layer? It's funny, but apart from this left palm problem, I don't need gloves even on bars that are, as far as padding goes, virtually bare. (Again, I don't do 1K mile rides and these aren't moustache bars.) -- Patrick Moore Albuquerque, NM Professional Resumes.
