Joe, While I live in Texas now, I lived and cycled in the Anaheim, Cerritos area for 21 years.
I rode to and from Doheney State Beach from Cerritos several times. I generally took PCH to one of the North South river trails (Santa Ana River or San Gabriel River). South of Newport Beach I would stay to the south of PCH on streets such as Bayside. Once you reach the Santa Ana River you can leave PCH and ride on the bikepath on the beach. I would suggest taking the bike path on San Gabriel and then Coyote Creek.
