I'm confused. Are you guys following the original route of the book and riding single speed/fixed gears? It would be cool to try to ride the ride with simplified drivetrains, unsupported, in non-cycling clothing. That would be my version of the ride. You can even start out with a small amount of money and take on odd jobs as you go to fund your way.
But cool that the ride is being organized as a fundraiser. Good luck.
