On some of the local routes, Amtrak allows bikes wheeled on the
trained and lashed.  When you go cross country they still make you box
the bike (fortunately the boxes are big enough that all you need do is
turn the bars and remove the pedals).

Crazyguyonabike had a trip report from Hungary I think.  It made me
jealous that even in such a small country, the train service had cars
with bike racks.  Some day ...
