You certainly smote it a good one.  A good friend did the same thing -
TWICE! And to the same BMW.  In his case, the car suffered but the
bike was OK (whew!).
Over the years, we've a few close calls (and one ruined rack) with
multiple drivers in strange cars on supported tours.  The solution we
found that works is to have a warning sign on the dashboard ("Caution
- Bike Overhead") whenever there's a bike on top.  It's EZ to sketch
something up quickly and display prominently.  Rear racks are another
option.
