Patrick, My experience is the tire/rim size has a lot to do with the propensity to pinch flat. Before I became more bicycle educated I ran 19/20 mm tires on various rim widths and pinch flatted on a regular basis (more so on the wider rims). Now I ride 28-37mm tires and don't recall the last pinch flat. The MA-2 rear rim on my Rambouillet (uses 28-30mm tires) has a couple of small rim "dents" but I have not pinch flatted on this bike.
I do not have experience carrying a significant rear load on tires the size you are using.
