"It has nothing to do with familiarity with equipment. You don't need a
scientific test to do the calculation. You just need a tiny bit of physics.
Let's say I have a Roadeo at 20 pounds, and my best friend, who weighs exactly
the same as I do, has a Ridiculous bike at 15 pounds (which he does). What
with water and stuff, my bike + rider weight is 180, and his is 175. Climbing
speed is proportional to weight. So if we were equally strong, on a hill where
I take 30 minutes, he'd beat me by 45 seconds. Which is actually quite a bit:
he'd be around a couple of bends and out of sight."

This is not that realistic. If you assume identical riders, identical bikes
(except for weight), identical wheels, components, gearing, etc, then maybe
there will be a 45 second gap.

If for some reason, one bike is not a good fit for one person or the one on the
lighter bike actually has heavier wheels or one of the riders has his/her bike
geared inappropriately for their riding ability and the given hill, then these
things could skew the results quite a bit. I've written this before about my
own experiences with my own bikes. I find that whatever road bike I've been
riding the most is fastest to the top of a famliar hill. This is true even when
that road bike is my Rivendell (which is easily 5 pounds heavier than my
Davidson). I think this is more due to the fact that both bikes differ in
geometry and gearing a bit and if I've been riding more on one, then I become
acclimated to that one and thus become more efficient on it.
