Someone mentioned the Surly LHT but there is also the Surly Troll. It
might look a bit funky with 1.5-1.75" tires but in it's stock configuration
with 2.1" tires, it's a great riding bike. Very agile and nimble with it's
short chainstays yet stable due to it's high trail front-end. I've been
experimenting with an old 80's MTB that is likely a clone of the 81-84
Stumpjumper and it and the Troll have similar rides, with the Troll being
more agile.

Also, you can get a custom from other builders for half the $3500 you
mentioned. Rodriguez Cycles in Seattle has a UTB, which is a 26" adventure
bike. They have 18 sizes and if needed, a complete custom design is only
$200 extra. If I ever have a custom frameset built, it will be by
Rodriguez.
