I have the 700x40 MSO on two bikes and like them. Good off-road and good on the pavement. The 60tpi is not too bad and can be found for $30 or so. Might be worth a try.
A friend has the Rock n Roads on his Black Mountain bike. Knobs are a little larger than the MSO so a little better on the dirt and a little louder on the road. I like supporting Bruce as well so when a pair of MSOs are ready to replace I'll probably go that direction. No experience with the Smart Sams or the Knard.
