Until I quit working in an office, I commuted 30 miles rt on a custom. Even now, that custom is my go to bike for errands, though I also have a Ram set up as a beater errand bike. (It's a nice beater.)
More seriously, the Ram is the mult-gear option when I am feeling lazy, but the custom still remains my "good" bike. Since so much of my riding is "utility" riding, it seems reasonable to do it on the best bike. For me, even "utility" riding is done for fun; if it's not fun, why bother? I can save the world in other ways.
