I've got the same setup on my Ritchey and it is great.  And there  
really are no grades around here that would require anything lower  
than a 34 x 28.  If I could only have something like a 12-24 cassette/ 
freewheel, then maybe I'd look at a 30T chainring.  On my All-Rounder  
(26" wheels) I have a 48/34 up front and (I think) 12-24 on the back.

Smaller chainwheels to get lower gears make better sense to me than  
bigger cogs in back, mainly for reasons of weight.
