Spoofed email is another hot button of mine. This sort of thing would be greatly reduced Policy Framework (SPF) was made a standard. In short, you designate what servers are authorized to send mail on your behalf for your domain say rivbike.com and you add this information to your public DNS records. Recipient servers can then check the IP of the sending server against what servers are known to be authorized to send mail on your behalf and reject emails from servers that are not authorized to send mail on your behalf.
Wikipedia has a pretty good description. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sender_Policy_Framework People are so afraid of not getting email though that not many so far have had the guts to require SPF on incoming email. I suppose this could touch off a follow up discussion on securing DNS...but anyway ;) not probably with this group. It gets pretty frustrating at times that there are easy solutions to many common Internet issues. But anyway :/ On Tue, Sep 2, 2014 at 3:49 PM, Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery < [email protected]> wrote: > I'm not an expert at such things, but I believe email accounts can be > spoofed without being hacked.
