If it's the square-section SKS you're using, that won't fit anything bigger than a 28-29mm. JBs are 33.33

i will try different tires with the sks fenders
for the winter, and pull the fenders
in the spring and remount the jb s.

What are good winter tires
for this set up?
Ruffy Tuffys or Rolly Polys
come to mind.

I think Paselas make an excellent tire for off-season use. Cheap, sturdy without being ponderously armor plated

Are the RT or RP s noticeably better than
the Panaracer Tourguard or PTs
or whatever they are called of late?

The RTs are probably much more flat resistant than non-belted Paselas

Try a 28. It's really what the bike was designed for, I believe.
