Glad no damage to you. I haven't used Tiagra, but Sora triple front derailleurs I've had have also just broken. Same failure more than once, the metal arm that holds the spring just snapped. (I obviously don't "save money" by baying Sora anymore.)
I like Shimano a lot, especially LX, but the mid-to-low-priced road derailleurs are showing a pattern that's not so good.
