I just received a black Riv cap too, and like you it fit odd on my narrow melon. Confused since it's the same Pace cap as all my others.
I took a gamble and threw it in the wash on a hot setting and dried it....now it fits great. YMMV but for me it shrunk out the excessive depth of the thing. I could pull it down over my ears prior.
