My winning combo is VP pedals with Asics running shoes. Light shoe, terrific interface with the pedal, excellent grip, and never feel the pedal through the sole.
Only drawback is this shoe is a bit minimalist for winter riding, but it doesn't rain anymore, so I just wear a thicker sock when it's cold.
