you can accomplish the same narrow range with wider rear steps and a
half-step crank.
This was 27" wheels, 120mm OLD, 46/41T rings (2nd rebuild)

It had all of Patrick's cruising requirements, but didn't have the short
gears to get me comfortably up the 14% grades in my neighborhood.

3rd rebuild with a 700C Synergy/ Phil wheelset, cold-set to 126mm OLD, and
wide-7 Suntour Winner freewheel, cyclotouriste triple with half-steps
(46/42T) plus 26T bail-out

This had only one overlap on the half-steps, 70 inches, which is a very
useful gear to have overlapped. The bailout got me down to 22 inches and up
trees if I wanted.

I started with the 3x7 gear chart, and duplicated what I needed from it in
a custom-9 compact double, that gave me a range of 23" to 95", and 5-inch
steps (single tooth) from 65 inches to 85 inches.
